The materials contact lenses are made of attract proteins and other deposits from the tears, contact lenses need to be cleaned to remove these deposits and then disinfected between wears to kill off potential sight threatening organisms, studies show that many infections and other complications are due to improper cleaning and disinfecting.

Nowadays most people will use a multi-purpose solution to clean disinfect and rinse their lenses, some solutions may cause sensitivity and redness due to the preservatives used,  while this is less of a problem that it used to be, if it is experienced, it is important to have the cause investigated to rule out other contact lens wear induced problems.

Smoking has been shown to be a risk factor for extended wear contact lens complications.

Contact lenses should be replaced as directed to reduce risk of infection, and cleaned and disinfected daily, not only will your eyes be safer and healthier, but your contact lenses will be more comfortable to wear.
